Katie Garner created Secret Stories® because she kept seeing the same struggle across classrooms: children want to read, but traditional phonics instruction often holds them back by introducing the phonics code too slowly and in disconnected pieces. What if we could tap into the way the brain naturally learns through meaning, pattern, and story, instead of rote memorization? What if we could work with existing core programs to make them more effective? That was the spark that led to Secret Stories.

Secrets Stories is not a curriculum, and it is not something to add on to what you’re already doing. Think of them as powerful, brain-based decoding tools that help kids figure out words they encounter everywhere (both in and out of the core materials they’re using). Rather than having children just “look at words” all day, the Secrets help them actively crack the code for almost anything they see, even in kindergarten or upper elementary who have fallen behind! This is the essence of what the science of reading shows us works best: give learners access to the phonics code so they can read words, not just memorize them.
